Sunu Gox: Community-Based Mapping for Urban Neighborhood Assessment - Dakar, 2017

The SUNU GOX project - Citizenship, Solidarity, Environment - funded for a period of 30 months by the European Union beginning December 1, 2016, is being implemented by GRET, which supports the Senegalese social movement Y en a marre. It aims to promote urban solidarity and citizenship by strengthening the capacity of citizen movements and grassroots organizations to take action for the environment and improve basic services in the suburbs of Dakar ( https://gret.org/actualite/2017/cartographier-le-senegal-rue-apres-rue/ ).


The association Les Libres Géographes, with the support of members of the OpenStreetMap Senegal community, carried out a community-based diagnostic mapping of an urban neighborhood, the result of a 4-month operational phase involving:

* Twenty people trained hands-on in OSM open mapping techniques using paper, mobile devices, and computers

* A rare community dynamic for an assessment phase, providing an opportunity for exchange and the creation of long-term connections between Dakar’s open geodata community and members of the grassroots organizations involved

* The completion, within two months, of detailed mapping (roads, buildings, points of interest, and items specific to the assessment) of the five target neighborhoods with support from the training team (additions, corrections)
